Colts’ Saturday Added To AFC Pro Bowl Roster

January 24, 2011 Updated Jan 24, 2011 at 11:42 PM EST

UNDATED (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – Indianapolis Colts center Jeff Saturday has been named to the 2011 Pro Bowl.

Saturday, a 12 year veteran with the Colts, has had four previous Pro Bowl nominations, from the 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009 seasons.

The veteran has started 172 of 181 career games, and he has participated in 130 career victories with Indianapolis, the third-highest total by any Colts player since 1953 (141, QB-Peyton Manning; 132, QB-John Unitas).

Saturday is replacing Pittsburgh center Maurkice Pouncey, whose club has advanced to Super Bowl XLV.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A 12th year veteran with the Indianapolis Colts has been named to the 2011 Pro Bowl.

Jeff Saturday has previously been voted to the AFC squad following the 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009 seasons.

The Indianapolis Colts center joined the club back in 1999 as a free agent.

He has started 172 of 181 career games, and he has participated in 130 career victories with Indianapolis, the third-highest total by any Colts player since 1953.

Saturday is replacing Pittsburgh C-Maurkice Pouncey, whose club has advanced to Super Bowl XLV.

That’s all for today.

Colts’ Saturday headed to Pro Bowl

Indianapolis Colts center Jeff Saturday was named to the 2011 Pro Bowl on Monday.

Indianapolis, IN (Sport Network) – Indianapolis Colts center Jeff Saturday was named to the 2011 Pro Bowl on Monday.

The 12-year veteran, who has four prior Pro Bowl selections, was tabbed to replace Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey, whose club has advanced to Super Bowl XLV.

In all likelihood, Pouncey wouldn’t have been able to participate if the Steelers didn’t advance, as he reportedly suffered a high left ankle sprain in Sunday’s victory over the Jets. It usually takes 4-to-6 weeks to recover from that type of injury.

Saturday has participated in the third-most victories by a Colts player in franchise history with 130. Only Johnny Unitas (132) and Peyton Manning (141) have celebrated more wins with the franchise.

Another early exit puts Colts in offseason mode

INDIANAPOLIS – Peyton Manning helped the Colts overcome injuries, struggles and his own slump this season.

Now team owner Jim Irsay will have to pay him for what he’s done.

One day after the defending AFC champs were eliminated from the playoffs with a 17-16 loss to the Jets, the Colts tried to turn their attention from another early exit to the uncertainty of this offseason.

It won’t be easy.

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t shocked. I really thought we’d be getting ready for Pittsburgh today,” said center Jeff Saturday, who will have a key role in labor negotiations. “I think Peyton summed it up best when he said it stings.”

Sting or not, the Colts (10-7) can’t afford to waste time looking back.

Their biggest priority this offseason, of course, is re-signing the only four-time MVP in league history. Irsay has repeatedly said he will make Manning the NFL’s highest-paid player, a stance Manning likely cemented with his big numbers in the most trying of seasons.

Despite losing All-Pro tight end Dallas Clark in Week 6 with a season-ending wrist injury and receiver Austin Collie for most of the season’s second half because of concussions, Manning still led the Colts to a record-tying ninth straight playoff appearance.

Turns out, that was the easy part.

What Irsay and Colts President Bill Polian must do now is figure out how to make a deal that gives them enough wiggle room to improve the team without using a collective bargaining agreement – or salary cap – to guide them.

Manning was not available to reporters in the locker room Sunday.

“To be honest with you, I’m not sure how that works with the GMs,” said Saturday, the Colts’ union rep. “I assume they’ll sign guys according to what the agreement is in now. Everybody’s in the same boat.”

But it’s the size of the boats that vary.

In Indy, Manning’s contract probably will have to be finalized before they can do anything else.

Who else will they have to deal with?

The list of potential free agents includes Joseph Addai, the team’s best blocking back and most productive runner; Adam Vinatieri, the best clutch kicker in league history; Charlie Johnson, Manning’s blind-side protector; Melvin Bullitt, a key backup at safety who is ready to start in the NFL; starting linebacker Clint Session and starting defensive tackle Dan Muir.

“There are a lot of things that go into it and there has got to be a want on the other side, too,” Vinatieri said, expressing his desire to return. “But there’s not another place I’d want to be.”

Pro Bowlers Robert Mathis and Reggie Wayne also want new deals, though they have one year left on their contracts.

And it’s Manning, as usual, that will be the key.

With Manning in charge, the Colts have gone from also-ran to perennial Super Bowl contender. Besides the four MVP awards, Manning has taken the Colts to two Super Bowls and won one.

Statistically, the 34-year-old Manning was as productive as he’s ever been.

He helped the Colts win a seventh division title in eight years, set a career high in yards (4,700), threw 33 TDs, 17 interceptions and broke the NFL record for completions in a season (450) though he had to throw a career-high 679 times to do all of it.

Because Indy couldn’t run the ball until December, the offensive line struggled and 18 players wound up on injured reserve, Manning also had to carry a larger burden than usual and still helped the Colts become the third team since 2000 to lose a Super Bowl and make the playoffs the following season.

But on Saturday night, all those shortfalls finally caught up to them.

The Jets ran for 169 yards, controlled the clock for most of the second half, kept Manning out of the end zone for the final 30 minutes and took advantage of a mishmash of special teams players with Antonio Cromartie’s 47-yard kickoff return.

That return helped set up Nick Folk’s last-second 32-yard field goal to win it, and sent Indy home without a playoff win for the third time in four seasons.

“We don’t like this taste in our mouth,” Addai said Saturday night. “I know the only thing to do, and it’s kind of hard to do this, but move forward.”

Moving on means figuring out how to get better.

Coach Jim Caldwell said Sunday he planned to take a break before he and his staff start evaluating players and preparing for the draft.

The biggest area of need is the offensive line, which Polian criticized after last season’s Super Bowl loss.

But the most important move going forward will be Manning’s contract.

“It’s probably unlike any other group that I’ve ever seen, had probably more adversity to deal with through the course of the season than most teams,” Caldwell said. “They did it, I think, in grand fashion. They were able to stare it right in the eye. They didn’t weep and complain. They didn’t implode. They didn’t point fingers. What they did is went to work and certainly did everything they possibly could to put us in position to win. We’re not satisfied with where we ended up, but I think the guys did a heck of a job.”

That’s all the news for today.

Familiar matchup: Jets hope for a better result vs. Colts

Feeling that déjà vu when checking out Saturday night’s prime-time showcase, the Jets bringing their swagger and ruckus into Indianapolis?

Doesn’t this look like another rerun the broadcast networks have foisted on America since they gave up on Saturday night?

Nope. And don’t think both teams don’t know it.

Oh, sure, Indianapolis thoroughly paddled the Jets over the last 35 minutes of last year’s AFC Championship Game.

They outscored the New Yorkers 24-0 on their way to a 30-17 win. Using swarming speed, they battered the NFL’s No. 1 rushing attack into submission. Eventually, they even pounded the ball on the NFL’s No. 1 run defense.

But these aren’t those Colts. The Jets did some upgrading over the past year.

“I think the fact that we did face the Colts in the championship last year [allows us] to know what to expect as far as their intensity, our intensity and the fans,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said. “We’re familiar with that environment. It’s going to be loud. I don’t think that is as big of a disadvantage as last year. I also think that we’re ready to play. I think we match up better this year than we did last year. The proof will be in the pudding. I just really think we can match up better.”

Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning agreed: “I think their players are better than last year. The guys that are new to the system, it is their second year playing in it. They added [Antonio] Cromartie at corner, who is a top cover corner in the NFL.”

Cromartie knows Manning well, having bedeviled him with four interceptions over a regular season and a playoff game in 2007 while with San Diego.

And, certainly, this isn’t the full array of weapons that eventually felled the Jets last year after propelling the Colts to a 14-2 season.

Instead of coming home eased up and pulling starters, Indianapolis needed a four-game winning streak and field goal as time expired in the season finale to win the AFC South. More names pack the injury report. Two security blankets for Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning, tight end Dallas Clark and wide receiver Austin Collie, sit on injured reserve.

In the best game a Rex Ryan-coached defense had against Manning, Baltimore held the Colts without a touchdown in a 2006 AFC Divisional Round game. With the Colts up 12-6, Manning and Clark combined on a precision third-down throw and diving catch that beat perfect coverage by Corey Ivey to set up a clinching field goal.

“We were watching our film from last year’s game against the Jets and some of the games we’ve played against the Ravens in years past, and Dallas played critical roles in all of those games,” Manning said. “It’ll be the first time playing against this style of defense without Dallas, so there is a change. It’s more of a challenge. Collie was awesome last year. We were kind of in a little bit of a lull at the end of the first half last year, and Collie, I think, caught three passes in a row and got a touchdown.”

That 2006 Baltimore game, in which Ryan was the Ravens defensive coordinator, came on the Saturday of Divisional Round weekend. Manning claimed playing the Jets on Saturday left him feeling behind on his fabled comprehensive preparation.

Ryan’s cockiness dissipates somewhat when discussing Manning. Somewhat.

“I’m not the only coordinator or person that Peyton has ever destroyed,” Ryan said. “I think it’s written that I’m his punching bag. Mine at least has some arms on it. Some of these other guys he plays, don’t have any arms on them. I plan on swinging back. We’ll see how that works out this week.”

Not much else going on in the NFL world today.
