Wayne Chooses to Play it Safe by Returning to…

Reggie Wayne is one of the best and most consistent receivers in the NFL. During the glory years of the Indianapolis Colts, Peyton Manning to Reggie Wayne became one of the best quarterback-receiver combinations in the league.

Wayne supplanted Marvin Harrison as the top receiver on the team. Harrison’s ability to get open and catch the ball were stellar, but he would almost always run out of bounds or look for a piece of turf to go fetal so he didn’t have to get tackled. As a receiver, he was a specialist who did not like to get hit.

Wayne is a different type of player. He is not afraid of contact and he seems to relish the opportunity of hammering a defensive player when that chance comes his way. He can make the tough catch, run after taking possession of the football and block. He’s not just a receiver, but he is a real football player. Wayne had seven straight seasons with 1,000 receiving yards before catching 75 passes for 960 yards with 4 touchdowns last year.

So it was a surprise that this real football player decided sign a new contract with the Indianapolis Colts after he became a free agent. It always seemed like Wayne was interested in becoming a winning player and playing for a winning team.

The Colts are clearly a rebuilding team at this point. Peyton Manning, tight end Dallas Clark, running back Joseph Addai, linebacker Gary Brackett and wide receiver Pierre Garcon are all gone. The Colts have the No. 1 pick and will select Stanford’s Andrew Luck, who has a boatload of talent and will likely become a star quarterback in the years to come. But he has much to learn and it will probably take him a couple of seasons to get up to speed.

Wayne, 33, signed a 3-year, $17.5 million contract with the Colts. Prior to the 2011 season, his career was all about being part of a winning organization. He was pursued by at least three other teams as a free agent, including the New England Patriots. Playing for Bill Belichick and with Tom Brady seems like it would have been the way for Wayne to go if winning another Super Bowl – or at least playing for a winning team – was his primary goal.

Wayne traded a chance to win to play in a comfortable environment. If he sees the Patriots back in the playoffs next season while the Colts languish in the vicinity of 5-11, his competitive nature will cause him to have second thoughts about taking the safe route back home.

Even though Peyton Manning will no longer be with the Indianapolis Colts, wide receiver Reggie Wayne will.

Wayne, 33, re-signed with the Colts on Tuesday, reaching agreement on a three-year deal, according to a Twitter message from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

There had been speculation that Wayne and Manning might sign with the same team, but that’s not going to happen.

The Colts are expected to draft quarterback Andrew Luck with the No. 1 overall pick, and they need some receivers for him. Pierre Garcon left Indianapolis for Dallas, and Anthony Gonzalez was let go. Tight end Dallas Clark is available as a free agent.

With Austin Collie and now Wayne, Luck will have at least two targets.

Last season, Wayne had 75 receptions for 960 yards and four touchdowns.

Indianapolis Colts part ways with quarterback…

Peyton Manning was cut by the Indianapolis Colts after a 14-year stint with the franchise that included a Super Bowl win and four National Football League MVP awards for the quarterback, the team said on Wednesday.

Manning, 35, missed the entire 2011 NFL season after neck surgery last September and was due a $28 million bonus if the club had decided to keep him.

“We’re here to announce the conclusion of Peyton’s playing career with the Colts,” team owner Jim Irsay said during an emotional news conference at the Colts’ practice facility in Indianapolis.

“We’re here very much as well to honour all the incredible memories and incredible things that he’s done for the franchise.”

Manning, who turned the Colts into a perennial contender and broke all of the franchise’s major career passing records, also struggled to choke back tears.

“I have been a Colt for almost all of my adult life, but I guess in life and in sports we all know that nothing lasts forever,” said Manning.

“I haven’t thought yet about where I’ll play but I have thought a lot about where I’ve been, and I’ve truly been blessed to play here an blessed to be in the NFL.”

Doctors have cleared Manning, who broke all of the team’s major career quarterbacking records and never missed a start before last season, to resume his career.

Manning, who will become perhaps the most sought after free agent ever in the NFL, stressed how much playing for the Colts had meant to him, but said he was eager to get back to playing.

“I’m throwing it pretty well,” he said. “I still have some progress to make, but I’ve been working pretty hard. I’m enjoying being back out there.

”Nobody loves playing quarterback more than I do.“

Irsay said severing ties with Manning was extremely difficult but that circumstances conspired to make a parting of the ways something that made sense to both parties since the Colts were in the early stages of a rebuilding process.

Following the season, the Colts set the stage for launching a new era by firing Vice Chairman Bill Polian, General Manager Chris Polian and head coach Jim Caldwell.

The Colts, who had a league-worst 2-14 record during Manning’s absence, have the No. 1 overall pick in April’s NFL draft, where Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck is widely pegged as the top choice.

Manning led Indianapolis to the playoffs 11 times, won two AFC championships and was named Super Bowl MVP in the Colts’ victory over the Chicago Bears in 2007.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Peyton Manning era in Indianapolis is expected to end Wednesday, according to a report.

Citing anonymous sources, ESPN reported today that the Colts plan to hold a news conference to announce the long-expected decision. Manning is expected to attend.

Team owner Jim Irsay and Manning’s agent, Tom Condon, did not immediately respond to messages left by The Associated Press.

Manning turns 36 later this month, and missed the entire 2011 season after a third neck surgery. Before that, he’d never missed a game in his 13 NFL seasons.

He is owed a $28 million bonus, and with the Colts holding the top draft pick, they apparently have decided it was too risky and pricey to keep the four-time league MVP.

Manning led the Colts to the 2006 NFL title.

That’s all the news for today.

NFL-Colts expected to cut ties with Manning -…

March 6 (Reuters) – The Peyton Manning era with the
Indianapolis Colts appears set to end as the National Football
League (NFL) team is expected to cut the 11-time Pro Bowl
quarterback on Wednesday, according to multiple reports.

The end of their 14-year relationship, which produced a
Super Bowl championship, was widely expected since Indianapolis
faced a deadline this week of paying a $28 million bonus to
Manning, who missed the entire 2011 season with a neck injury.

Sources close to the team said the announcement will be made
at a news conference in Indianapolis with both Manning and Colts
owner Jim Irsay in attendance, according to ESPN, which first
reported the news on Tuesday.

The decision to pass on the bonus and not pick up the four
remaining years on Manning’s contract would make the four-time
league most valuable player a free agent.

Manning, who turns 36 later this month, had his third neck
surgery in 19 months, to fuse two vertebrae in September.

Doctors have cleared him to resume his career and Manning
has returned to training as nerves in his neck have regenerated.

Manning has broken all of Indianapolis’ career records for a
quarterback and had never missed a start before last season.

He led Indianapolis to the playoffs 11 times and won two AFC
championships and was named Super Bowl MVP in the Colts’ victory
over the Chicago Bears in 2007.

Indianapolis finished with the league’s worst record last
season and have since endured a tumultuous offseason that has
already claimed the jobs of Vice Chairman Bill Polian, General
Manager Chris Polian and head coach Jim Caldwell.

The Colts, who posted a 2-14 record in Manning’s absence,
have the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft, where Stanford
quarterback Andrew Luck is widely pegged as the top choice.

Colts to part ways with Manning: report

Peyton Manning will be dropped by the Indianapolis Colts after 14 seasons with the NFL club that included a Super Bowl title in 2007, ESPN reported on Tuesday.

Citing unnamed sources close to the team, the US-based sports television network reported that Manning and Colts coach Jim Irsay would speak at a news conference in Indianapolis on Wednesday to announce the decision.

The Colts have until Thursday to pay Manning, who missed all of last season after three neck operations to fuse vertebrae, a $28 million bonus and pick up the remaining four years on his NFL contract.

Declining the option means Manning will be a free agent and able to make his own deal with any club, an option the four-time NFL Most Valuable Player is expected to pursue, according to the report.

Doctors have cleared Manning to return to the NFL and resume his career although some sources were concerned about his arm strength as nerves regenerated following the most recent operation last September.

Manning had not missed a start for the Colts until last season, but his absence played a major role in the team finishing a league-worst 2-14 and obtaining the first pick in next month’s NFL Draft.

That gives the Colts an opportunity to look to the future and they are expected to take US collegiate gridiron star quarterback Andrew Luck of Stanford with the top selection in the draft.

Manning took the Colts to the playoffs 11 times and took Indianapolis to two Super Bowls, losing the most recent to New Orleans at Miami in 2010.

What are your opinions.

Indianapolis Colts Will Release Peyton Manning

NEWS

» by Kazeem Famuyide (@RealLifeKaz) March 6, 2012, 18:23pm

One of the most prolific quarterback’s to ever play the game will be released by the only professional team he’s ever played for. Sources close to the Indianapolis Colts told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen that the team will release Peyton Manning. The announcement will come at a press conference in Indianapolis on Wednesday.

The four-time NFL Most Valuable Player’s release comes just one day before he was due a $28 million bonus, making him a free agent. Manning missed the entire 2011 NFL season recovering from three neck surgery in 19 months; which resulted in seeing his younger brother Eli lead the New York Giants to the Super Bowl.

Manning holds all quarterback records for the Indianapolis Colts including, and has taken the Colts to the playoffs 11 times, captured seven AFC South titles in eight years, won two AFC championships, one Super Bowl title and a Super Bowl MVP Award. The Indianapolis Colts will more than likely pin their franchise’s hopes on consensus #1 overall prospect, Andrew Luck, out of Stanford; while teams like the Dolphins, Redskins, Jets and more have inquired for the services of the 35-year-old Manning.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

Report: Peyton to know future by Friday

Updated Mar 6, 2012 3:08 PM ET

The Indianapolis Colts’ decision on whether to keep Peyton Manning will have to be made by Friday at 4:00 p.m. ET, the NFL Network reported Tuesday.

The Colts have until Thursday to pick up a $28 million option on Manning’s contract for next season. It is believed to be unlikely that the Colts will choose to pay the 35-year-old Manning that amount, since he missed the entire 2011 season following several neck surgeries.

Colts owner Jim Irsay has expressed interest in bringing the four-time MVP back to Indianapolis at a much lower salary.

Negotiations on a new contract could continue up until Friday afternoon. After that point, the Colts would be on the hook for a $28 million “non-exercise” fee for not picking up the option.

The team could opt to announce they are releasing Manning at any time between now and Friday.

If Manning is not retained by the Colts he would become a free agent when the NFL year begins March 13.

Manning has been working out in recent weeks at Duke University, where his former offensive coordinator at Tennessee is the head coach.

There have been varying reports on Manning’s current health, with the most significant question being how close his arm strength is to returning to normal.

Manning’s father, Archie, said last week his son “looks fine” on the field, and on Saturday a short video was released of Manning throwing to Colts receivers Dallas Clark and Austin Collie in an “aggressive throwing session.”

The Colts are expected to use the first pick in April’s draft to select former Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, regardless of whether Manning is still in the fold.

There is the quick update of the day.

Mannings OK with Luck

ATLANTIC CITY – Ever since the Indianapolis Colts’ season vanished down the tubes, about the same time Andrew Luck emerged as an absolute lock to become the first overall selection in the 2012 NFL draft, the Luck and Manning families have been answering questions about their uncomfortable juxtaposition.

They hadn’t been answering them in the same room, until the magic of the 75th annual Maxwell Club Awards brought Luck, the Stanford quarterback, and Archie Manning, the patriarch of America’s royal quarterbacking family, together yesterday at a news conference at Harrah’s. They also were scheduled to share space at the evening banquet, Luck honored as the Maxwell award winner (college player of the year), Manning receiving the Reds Bagnell Award for contributions to football.

“I tried to get Peyton here,” said Maxwell president and former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski, who has a keen eye for what might bring the venerable institution a little more publicity. “I was with Peyton at the Super Bowl. Obviously, Archie being his dad, I said it’d be good to come down and honor your dad and be here, but obviously, he’s got some things that are a little bit more important right now, like getting healthy. But I had envisioned Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck on that dais . . . It’d be a pretty good photo to have, with those two guys.”

Luck just spent several days at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, where he performed in Peyton Manning’s shadow literally as well as figuratively. No. 18′s photo adorns the front of Lucas Oil Stadium, where the Colts play and the combine is held. Images of the man who might be the best QB of all time also dot the interior of the cavernous arena, as you might expect.

“The Mannings are unbelievable people,” Luck said yesterday. He attended their QB camp as an eighth-grader, then served as a counselor there the past two summers – all before he became Peyton’s heir apparent. The Colts are expected to release Manning, instead of paying him a $28 million bonus due if he is still on the roster, this coming Thursday. “People do speculate. It’s part of the business, how this world works today. Whatever happens will happen for the best, and I’m sure it will work out.”

Luck also comes from a football family; he is the son of Oliver Luck, the former West Virginia quarterback, currently the athletic director there, who also played for the Houston Oilers.

“I’m comfortable [being in the same room]. I know Andrew, I know his dad extremely well, they’re great people,” Archie Manning said. “There’s not going to be any trouble between the Lucks and the Mannings. I’m sure they feel just like I do – this thing’ll work out . . . We’re all crazy about Andrew.”

Archie acknowledged that last summer, watching Andrew throw and supervise at the Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux, La., he had no idea how fate would twist.

“If you followed the Colts over the last decade or so, they usually won about 12 games a year. All of a sudden, they had a year where they won two and got the first pick in the draft. I’m not sure anybody predicted that, but that’s football,” Archie said. “It’s oblong and it bounces funny.”

Luck said the Manning camp “was a great experience.”

“The Mannings do such a great job of letting college quarterbacks get together, and coach[ing] these kids, and [letting them] sort of congregate as a fraternity of quarterbacks, per se . . . They’re the nicest family,” he said.

Luck has been reluctant to talk about the Colts’ situation; they haven’t yet released Manning, and of course, they haven’t officially drafted Luck.

“I think you handle your own business and you don’t really worry about whatever else is going on,” he said. “There’s a long way to go before anything happens. I don’t really pay attention to what’s said. If [getting drafted by the Colts] happens, great. If it doesn’t, great . . . I’m not getting caught up in things before they happen.”

Theoretically, of course, the Colts could draft Luck to understudy Manning – though a rebuilding team paying $28 million to try to squeeze 1 more year out of a 36-year-old quarterback who didn’t play last season because of career-threatening neck surgery would be pretty darned unusual.

“I think you make it work, whatever situation you find yourself in,” Luck said. “I’m sure it would be fine.”

“I can’t speak for Peyton, but we’ve all thought this through – that’s not the Colts team he left,” Jaworski said. “It’s totally different. It’s a new coaching staff. It’s obvious they’re going in a different direction. If you’re Peyton Manning, do you want to go through what you went through 14 years ago, getting beat up for 16 games, before the supporting cast comes along, and then you’re 39 and you’re done?”

An Indianapolis Star report yesterday said Peyton Manning, working out in Florida, has seen his arm strength return. Earlier, nerve problems associated with his injury had limited his velocity. Archie Manning said he last saw Peyton throw in New Orleans a few weeks ago and “he looked like Peyton. We’ll see what happens.”

Peyton probably will always be the greatest Colt (in their Indianapolis incarnation, anyway), but Archie indicated his son realizes being a surefire Hall of Famer doesn’t mean you get to wear the uniform as long as you want. He said Peyton “gets it” and “is a big boy.”

To hear Luck tell it, he barely realized he was in Manning’s lair at the combine.

“I was focused on myself. It was a job interview being up there for the combine,” he said. “I approached it as a business trip . . . it wasn’t hard to stay focused on that task at hand.”

Jaworski said he thought Luck could handle the Manning legacy with aplomb.

“This kid is beyond-his-years mature,” Jaworski said. “He gets it. There are some guys, they never get it. This guy, at a young age, maybe because of Oliver, and his mom, Kathy, and being around the game – this is a special dude, he really is.”

Luck said if he ended up chatting with Archie at the Maxwell dinner, he would just “see where the conversation leads, I guess. I haven’t planned out things to ask.”

Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne: Will they end up…

Seven days before the deadline by which the Indianapolis Colts must pay Peyton Manning $28 million or release him, there’s the possibility that one of his favorite targets may be available to relocate with him.

Reggie Wayne, according to an SI.com report, could become a free agent March 13 and follow Manning, who presumably will be released, to his new team. “At least two potential suitor teams would seriously consider [signing Wayne] in an attempt to lure” Manning, Peter King writes. Manning, one source tells King, “would love to see it happen.”

And Wayne? King reports that he is “very interested in the combo platter also.”

As for the future of wide receiver Pierre Garcon in Indy, King reports that he turned down a five-year offer from the Colts last week “because he doesn’t want to do anything until he knows what Manning is going to do.”

King cites the Miami Dolphins, Seattle Seahawks, the New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins as “Manning’s most likely suitors.” (The NFL Network reports the Jets are an unlikely destination for Manning. Brian Billick thinks Miami and Washington would be poor destinations for Manning.) Which team would be the best fit for him and Wayne?

Former Colts executive Polian joins ESPN as NFL…

BRISTOL, Conn. — Former Indianapolis Colts Vice Chairman Bill Polian has joined ESPN as an NFL analyst.

Polian makes his debut March 12 and will appear throughout the year on several ESPN shows, including SportsCenter.

Polian spent 24 years as an NFL general manager with the Bills, Panthers and Colts. He drafted four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning and built the Colts into a team that went to the playoffs 11 times, won eight division titles, two AFC titles and a Super Bowl.

In January, he and his son, general manager Chris Polian, were fired by Colts owner Jim Irsay in a major shake-up that included firing coach Jim Caldwell and his staff.

At ESPN, Polian will focus on the NFL draft, free agency and other business-related issues.

ESPN announced the hiring Wednesday.
