The Indianapolis Colts' No.

The Indianapolis Colts’ No. 1 draft pick Andrew Luck isn’t participating in the current on-going organized team activity (OTA), giving an early indication as to what kind of quarterback and teammate Luck is going to be in Indy: a smart one.

Is Luck holding out for a monstrous contract? No. Is he throwing a tantrum and refusing to play for the Colts like another former Stanford quarterback did in 1983 after being selected No. 1 overall? No. Is he injured? No.

Luck is back in Palo Alto, Calif., right now, finishing up his degree in architectural design.

The final two courses that are required for him to complete his degree at Stanford weren’t offered until the spring semester, which runs until June 7. In a great piece by Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports, Luck doesn’t really want to be there right now–he’d rather be in Indianapolis with his team–but he’s doing what needs to be done. And as a Colts fan, I couldn’t be happier with his decision.

Sure, NFL rules prohibit him participating in OTA’s until he’s done with his coursework, but if earning his college degree wasn’t important to him, Luck would have foregone his final year or two of eligibility and entered the NFL back before the new collective bargaining agreement brought rookie contracts back down to Earth.

Sure, missing a month or so of off-season preparation during his rookie year isn’t ideal from a football standpoint, but when looking at the big picture of life, it’s not that big of a deal, especially when the payout is a bachelor’s degree from a top-notch institution like Stanford. With that, Luck is armed for a life outside of football, giving him a leg up on his NFL colleagues who left college without a degree.

The Colts coaches are keeping in contact with him while he wraps up his education, and by Silver’s account, Luck already got off to a tremendous start as a member of the Colts at the three-day rookie minicamp earlier this month.

“I’m told he was calling out plays like he had the whole playbook memorized, and some of the other rookies were looking around like, ‘What?’” Colts OT Mike Tepper told Silver. “Some of the guys, including the other QBs, were saying that Luck is already better than 25 of the [starting] quarterbacks in the league.”

Missing a few weeks of camp four months before the season starts isn’t going to permanently stunt his growth, nor will it set the team back. By the time Sept. 9 rolls around and Luck takes his first regular season snap in the NFL against the Chicago Bears, no one will remember–much less, care about–the time he is missing right now. But on June 7, he’ll have something that lasts forever: a college education.

Like most NFL fans, I like my team’s quarterback to make good decisions on the field. I also like him to make good decisions off the field. With Luck’s decision to fight through the senioritis and finish up his degree before focusing all of his attention on the upcoming season, he’s showing me that he’s one smart and dedicated quarterback–one who’s willing to stay until the job is done. One who realizes that life is more important than football. And one who realizes that football can take a back seat for a little bit while he sets himself up for success after his playing days are over.

Touchdown, Andrew Luck.

For a generation of Indianapolis Colts fans, Bill Polian will always be remembered as the architect of the first golden era of the NFL in our Circle City, and even the debacle of the lost 2011 season probably can’t change that perception. Before he ever came west, though, Polian made his name as the general manager of the Buffalo Bills teams that won three straight AFC championships in the early 1990s. Back then, I often found myself rooting for the Bills in the playoffs, partly because they toiled in the same division as the lowly Colts, but mostly because they maintained a likable underdog persona year after year. I guess that three straight Super Bowl losses can dull the edge of public perception, and those “failures” were also enough to cost Polian his Buffalo gig in February of 1993. Time apparently heals, though, as the Bills announced on May 14 that Polian will soon be honored as the newest member of the team’s “Wall of Fame.” It may be a bit early yet, but this news made me ponder Polian’s ultimate place in Colts’ history.

If you just consider that Polian was in charge when the Colts drafted Manning in 1998, it’s tempting to elevate the President to “Ring of Honor” status without a second thought. Rumors have always persisted, though, the whispers around town were that Polian preferred Ryan Leaf and that Irsay pulled rank to get Manning in Blue and White. Who knows? Had Polian been a little more seasoned in his relationship with Irsay at the time, maybe Leaf would have landed in Indy, flamed out and taken the franchise with him. Without Manning, after all, there is a decent chance that the Colts would have moved west at some point in the last 15 years.

As it stands, we have to give Polian at least some of the credit for selecting Manning and keeping him happy for more than a decade. In his early drafting days with the Colts, Polian delivered a nice stable of players to complement Manning’s talents. The list of picks before their Super Bowl runs reads like a roll call of Colts stars during the 2000s: Edgerrin James, Reggie Wayne, Dwight Freeney, Dallas Clark, Bob Sanders. In the last several years, the Colts have pretty much whiffed on their first-rounders, which many attribute to the growing responsibilities of Polian’s son, team general manager Chris Polian.

So, there is a mixed bag for Bill Polian in terms of his Indianapolis legacy. Many saw him as something of a tyrant, and many others think that he was largely a puppet for Irsay. My take is that Polian could get pretty defensive at times and was very hard-headed when it came to admitting a mistake, which may be why the Colts were caught flat-footed in terms of quarterback depth when Manning went down last year. Still, Polian was in charge when Indianapolis became a bona fide NFL city, and he managed to keep the wheels on and rolling when a lot of big egos were involved. To me, that should earn him the benefit of the doubt and some mantel space in the Colts’ trophy room.

Adam Hughes was raised, and still lives, in rural Indiana. He has been a Colts fans since the team arrived in Indianapolis on a snowy morning in 1984. The Blue and White eventually replaced the Chicago Bears as his #1 team, and Super Bowl XLI was a dream come true.

Not much else going on in the NFL world today.

Before it became clear that Peyton Manning was going to miss the 2011 NFL season, one of the biggest points of contention swirling around the Indianapolis Colts was what to do with running back Joseph Addai. Addai had the unenviable task of following Marshall Faulk and Edgerrin James as Manning’s featured back, and we all noticed that he wasn’t quite up to their standard as a runner. I always thought Addai was somewhat underrated around the Circle City considering that he could catch the ball and provided stout pass-blocking, allowing Manning to work his magic. Nevertheless, I have to admit that he always seemed pretty tired and unspectacular coming out of the backfield, and it’s not hard to understand why Colts fans shed no tears when he was released earlier this year. Now, doubting Indy supporters have even more reason to dislike Addai, as he signed with the New England Patriots on May 10.

It’s always odd to see a player jump from one side of a heated rivalry to the other, and this rings true even when the player is a relative castoff. Addai to the Patriots is not quite akin to Babe Ruth (or even Johnny Damon) leaving the Boston Red Sox for the New York Yankees, but the same basic parameters are in place for some good sports drama. Addai has been on the decline for seemingly his entire NFL career, peaking with 4.8 yards rushing per game and 1081 ground yards during his his rookie season in 2006. By the time he limped to the finish line last year, Addai had managed just 433 running yards in 12 games and failed to gain 100 receiving yards for the first time in his career. He is clearly not what he once was, and he just turned 29 years old. In running back terms, that means that he could run into the end of the line just as easily as an end zone at just about any time.

Even with declining running skills and a quickly aging bodies, I won’t be surprised at all to see Addai kick his game into gear for at least one more year in New England. He may not rack up big rushing numbers, but that was never really his bag anyway. Under coach Bill Belichick and working with quarterback Tom Brady, I expect Addai to regain some of the versatility that made him a valuable piece of two Colts Super Bowl teams. He will also likely take on a large chunk of the backfield blocking chores and free up the Pats’ young runners to sharpen their game. And, when the Colts visit on November 18, look for Addai to have something like a career day.

After all, nothing could cleanse the sourness leftover from 2011 better than sticking it to the Colts in 2012.

The Indianapolis Colts still have several holes to fill on their roster. The team brought in several undrafted rookies and many of them stand a good chance to make the final roster for the 2012. Listed below are five players who could challenge for a roster spot in 2012.

Chigbo Anunoby

Anunoby is a big player that could challenge at the nose tackle position. If fifth round draft choice Josh Chapman isn’t ready to begin the season, Anunoby could push to make the roster. Brandon McKinney is the only player currently on the roster who has experience at the nose tackle position. At six-feet-four inches and 324 pounds, Anunoby is a big body at the position.

Micah Pellerin

Pellerin was rated highly entering the draft and went undrafted. He was originally expected to be a cornerback, but is being listed by the team as a safety. Indianapolis is lacking depth at both positions and could use young talent to develop. I think Pellerin is the kind of player that could challenge for a roster spot.

Antonio Fenelus

It’s no surprise that the team has a major need at cornerback. Fenelus comes from an established program in Wisconsin and could challenge for a roster spot. There will be good competition in the secondary at training camp and I think Fenelus could be the favorite amongst the undrafted players to make the roster.

Steven Baker

Baker is a talented young player and could develop into a strong offensive tackle. The team has little depth on the offensive line and could choose to keep Baker to develop into a future right tackle. I think he has a good chance to make the final roster.

Jabin Sambrano

Sambrano is included on the list after a strong performance at the first rookie mini-camp. He developed a strong connection with quarterback Andrew Luck and has a leg up on other receivers already. Sambrano has the size and speed that offensive coordinator Bruce Arians likes. Sambrano will likely have to beat out rookie Lavon Brazill or Donnie Avery to make the team though.

The Indianapolis Colts are trying to avoid entering a rebuilding phase. Although several talented players are no longer with the team, there are plenty of good players remaining in Indianapolis. There are five veterans remaining out there that the team should look to sign to add more competition at training camp and make the team better.

Bryant McFadden

The team badly needs help at cornerback and McFadden is a veteran that is familiar with the style of defense Indianapolis wants to play. McFadden would add leadership to the secondary and is still a good player. He would add much needed depth at the teams biggest are of need right now.

Travis Laboy

Laboy is familiar with the defense and has played under defensive coordinator Greg Manusky the last two seasons. He also plays a position of need and would add a player comfortable playing in a 3-4 defensive style. I think Laboy signing with Indianapolis makes perfect sense at this point.

Tyler Brayton

Brayton was with the team last year and played well in limited action. I think he could transition well as a 3-4 defensive end and add another veteran presence on the defensive line. This is also a player that Indianapolis could add at near the veterans minimum who could contribute in 2012.

Chris Kemoeatu

The veteran Pittsburgh offensive lineman was a talented player when healthy. The offensive line is one of the few groups with uncertainty surrounding it on the roster. Adding Kemoeatu would help add to the competition at training camp and could be a major boost if he can remain healthy. Adding Kemoeatu alongside Samson Satele on the inside would only help the interior of the offensive line.

Drew Coleman

The cornerback was recently released by the Jacksonville Jaguars and has experience that this team badly needs in the secondary. A veteran has to be found somewhere and Coleman is one of the better corners available. Still just 29 years old, Coleman has plenty left and would be a viable addition to the secondary.

The Indianapolis Colts still have several holes to fill in their transition to a 3-4 defense. One of the biggest needs is at the outside linebacker position. The team needs players that know and are comfortable in the 3-4 scheme and can help the current players with the transition. One player who could fit that need is Travis Laboy who was released by the San Diego Chargers on May 7.

Laboy is far from a great player and wouldn’t deserve to be a starter on the roster. At this point, the team needs veterans to ease the transition and provide quality depth. If he’s willing to sign a minimum contract, Laboy would be able to fill in behind Freeney and Mathis and provide a solid rotational player for the team. Right now Indianapolis only has other players transitioning to the position behind Freeney and Mathis. Those players may or may not pan out and have a mixed chance of success.

One major factor that could make this move happen is Laboy’s familiarity with the system Indianapolis is trying to implement. Laboy played the last two seasons for new defensive coordinator Greg Manusky in both San Diego and San Francisco. I think this is a natural fit for the team and one they should jump to make. Andrew Luck will need time to develop and needs a strong defense around him. Travis Laboy isn’t a name that should excite fans by any means. This is the kind of signing that helps improve the team though. Veterans are needed and he could provide help to the players currently on the roster.

At this point in the summer, Indianapolis has a few needs left to fill out the roster. They should have a strong rookie class and could use one or two veterans on defense to improve the roster entering training camp. I think Travis Laboy would be a nice addition and is a signing that the team should make. The addition isn’t one that should get fans overly excited, but is one that could improve the team in 2012.

This offseason has produced a lot of change for the Indianapolis Colts. Fans feel like the entire team has been gutted and rebuilt

This offseason has produced a lot of change for the Indianapolis Colts. Fans feel like the entire team has been gutted and rebuilt. Many don’t realize that several of the teams biggest stars are returning and will be apart of the roster in 2012. Listed below are the five best players returning to the team. Fans will be surprised to see that four of the five are from the defensive side of the ball.

 Reggie Wayne

Like many fans, I was relieved when the team re-signed Reggie Wayne this offseason. He’ll be an invaluable asset for rookie quarterback Andrew Luck. I think Wayne still has a lot of good football left in him and should be able to play out his three year contract.

 Dwight Freeney

Freeney is one of the elite pass rushers in the game and one of the most popular players on the team. I’m very happy that he appears to be returning after trade rumors popped up earlier in the offseason. Coach Pagano is now taking about how he intends to use Freeney similar to Terrell Suggs in Baltimore’s defense. Fans should be very excited about this.

 Robert Mathis

Mathis re-signed with the team just before the free agency period and will remain a part of the team for another four years. This year will bring a position change for Mathis though. He will be expected to play outside linebacker in the new 3-4 defensive alignment. Fans should be very happy to have number 98 still on the roster this year.

 Antoine Bethea

I’ve always felt that Bethea is one of the most underrated players in the NFL. He’s an excellent safety and has made the Pro Bowl twice already in his career. I think he can thrive in Pagano’s defense and may have his best football ahead of him.

 Pat Angerer

Angerer really burst onto the scene with a strong season in 2011. He was amongst the league leaders in tackles all year and was always around the ball on defense. I think he’ll thrive even more in a 3-4 system where plays are funneled towards the linebackers.

This year’s Indianapolis Colts rookie camp deserves its own theme: Andrew Luck’s Rookie Reunion.

After drafting Luck and Stanford tight end Coby Fleener with their first two picks in last week’s NFL Draft, the Colts signed Stanford wide receiver Griff Whalen as one of 15 rookie free agents.

So Luck will have some familiar targets for his first weekend of passes as a Colt from Friday through Sunday at the Colts practice complex on Indy’s west side.

“You are always looking for playmakers,” Colts coach Chuck Pagano said Sunday, looking back at the draft. “You want to surround your No.1 pick with (playmakers). We said all along (Luck) doesn’t have to carry this whole thing on his shoulders. You try to surround him with as many guys as you can, and we certainly did that. Guys that can score touchdowns, you can’t have enough of them.”

The Colts are expected to have 25 players at rookie camp, and nine of them are skill position players: Luck, Fleener, Whalen, tight end Dwayne Allen, receivers T.Y. Hilton, LaVon Brazill and Jabi Sambrano and quarterback Chandler Harnish.

Fleener and Whalen are the most familiar with Luck, but other players are eager to develop rapport with the new quarterback.

“He’s been touted as the top quarterback in the draft, and all of college football, so I’m ecstatic to catches passes from him,” Allen said. “Of course with all the media coverage he had throughout his junior season, I’ve been able to watch some of his games and see how much he loves the tight end. So, hopefully, that love translates to his NFL game.”

This week will be the only official practice time for Luck with the Colts until he graduates from Stanford in June. He is allowed, under the rules, to have unofficial workouts with other Colts offsite, perhaps in California or at Miami where wide receiver Reggie Wayne lives.

At any rate, he knows there remain areas he needs to work in preparation for the season.

“I’ve got to get back to throwing a good deep ball,” Luck said. “I think that comes, too, with reps with the receivers and sort of feeling each other out and seeing the differences between all of our guys. Then, (the receivers) seeing how I throw and all of that good stuff. But that will come with reps and time, and I am looking forward to getting going with the guys.”

Luck said he has already investigated the possibility of finding some places to work with receivers while he’s finishing up at Stanford.

“Absolutely, we’re trying to be very creative,” Luck said. “I’ve gotten a couple of texts from Reggie about it. We’re trying to organize some things. There is so much going on leading up to this and I didn’t really have much time to sit down and think, but I’ll definitely talk to coach Clyde (Christensen), coach (Bruce) Arians, and the receivers.

“I guess they are learning the playbook, too, right now, as well. It’d be nice to let that sink in with the guys, so they can help me with some of the stuff when we get together.”
